One of the most exciting places to visit on Oahu is the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. This amazing cove is located on the east side of Oahu and is one of the worlds premiere snorkeling destinations. The bay is a natural pool that has formed in a volcanic crater. Originally the volcanic eruptions formed the crater on the sea floor, and waves from the ocean eventually filled the circular bay.
Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay is extremely popular because of tropical fish and young sea turtles inhabiting the bay. Some of the fish include the Hawaii state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa, as well as angel fish, parrot fish and butterfly fish. There are several hundred types of fish and you can view a few more by visiting our wild life page.
Hanauma Bay sees on average 3000 visitors a day, so we recommend arriving to the bay early. The parking lot often fills quickly and you will be turned away if it is full. A better option is to book a snorkel tour through our Snorkel Tours Hawaii booking page. Snorkel Tours Hawaii offers shuttle service from your Waikiki hotel to the bay and back, plus snorkel, mask, and fins.
If snorkeling is one of the main reasons for your trip, or if you are just looking to enjoy one of Hawaii’s best adventures, you don’t want to miss out on Hanauma Bay.
